Adjustment of Status
Adjustment of Status to Legal Permanent Resident

Understanding Adjustment of Status

If you are in the United States, you may be eligible to adjust your status  and become a lawful permanent resident (the process also known as applying for a Green Card).  The process involves an eligible applicant preparing and filing with the USCIS a package of documents and form I-485 (application for Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status) The process also involves  paying a filing fee (unless exemption applies), submitting to a biometrics appointment, and usually attending an interview at the local USCIS Field Office.

But firstly, you need to determine if you are eligible to adjust your status.  Some immigrants could obtain their green card through Family connections, others through Employment.  Additionally, you may apply through Refugee or Asylee Status, or as a Special Immigrant category.  There are few other possible routes to obtain Green Card.  However, in most cases the process is complex and it is recommended to at least consult an immigration lawyer.
